EHP and Norway Grants: Wetland rescuers in action!
Did you know that up to 4.8 million EUR from Norwegian grants and the Slovak budget is dedicated for the restoration of wetland ecosystems. Today 2. February, just like every year, we commemorate the World Wetland Day again!
The SK-Climate programme lends a hand to the restoration of these rare areas, which face climate challenges and are gradually losing their natural ability to fight against the negative effects of climate change.
Do you know the role of wetlands?
- They have the ability to store huge amounts of carbon, thus contributing to alleviating the atmosphere from greenhouse gases;
- They ensure regulation of the water regime in the country;
- Protecting wetlands means protecting biodiversity;
- They act as natural water filters;
- These ecosystems are essential to maintaining biodiversity as they provide refuge and food for a number of animals, including birds, amphibians and insects.
As part of the SK-Climate programme, up to 6 of the following projects are implemented to restore degraded wetland ecosystems:
- ACC04P01: "Wet for Life and Prosperity: Restoration of Ramsar Site in the Aluvian River" - https://levarskemokrade.eu/
- ACC04P02: "Eco-hydrological restoration of peat fields in the Carpathians" - https://obnovaraselinisk.sopsr.sk/
- ACC04P03: "Let's save wetlands together" - https://vodapreklimu.sk/.../projekt-save-wetland.../
- ACC04P04: "Wetlands Restoration - Lake Ve ACCká Krčava and Žitavský Luh" - https://www.svp.sk/.../obnova-mokradi-jazero-velka.../
- ACC04P05: "Improvement of the wetland NPR Klátovské rameno" - https://mokradeklatovske.sk/
- ACC04P06: "Improvement of the condition of selected wetlands in the left shoulder structure of the Danube River" - https://dunajskemokrade.sk/
These projects not only add their part to the restoration of diverse wetland ecosystems in different parts of Slovakia, but also cooperate internationally with our Norwegian partners to revive these precious areas.
